What we accept

The magnet test

First instinct: the magnet. Common 300-series stainless (304, 316) is non-magnetic, or only weakly magnetic. If the magnet sticks firmly, it's probably ordinary steel or a 400-series stainless of lower value. The test is only a first indicator, our team confirms the grade at the yard.

304 vs 316

304 is the most widespread stainless: sinks, kitchen equipment, countertops. 316, enriched with molybdenum for corrosion resistance, shows up in marine, chemical, and pharmaceutical equipment and generally pays more. When in doubt, bring the piece in, we'll identify it.

Common sources

Sinks, commercial kitchen equipment (tables, hoods, vats), industrial piping and fittings, tanks, marine hardware.

What lowers the grade

Plastic, rubber, insulation, and attached ordinary-steel parts lower the grade. A sink stripped of its faucet and mounting clips is worth more.

Preparation tips

  • ✓Test with a magnet: if it doesn't stick, it's likely 300-series stainless, the best-paying kind.
  • ✓Remove faucets (often brass, paid separately and better) and clips from sinks.
  • ✓Strip plastic, wood, and rubber from kitchen equipment.
  • ✓Keep stainless separate from iron: mixed with ordinary steel, the whole lot grades as iron.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my metal is stainless steel? ▾
Do the magnet test: common stainless (304, 316) is non-magnetic or barely magnetic. The shiny finish, absence of rust, and weight are other clues. Our team confirms the grade at the yard.
What's the difference between 304 and 316 stainless? ▾
304 is the standard stainless in sinks and kitchen equipment. 316 contains molybdenum for better corrosion resistance, found in marine and industrial settings, and generally pays more.
My magnet sticks slightly, could it still be stainless? ▾
Possibly: some cold-worked or 400-series stainless is slightly magnetic. Bring the piece to our Longueuil yard and we'll identify it with our equipment.
Do you accept complete sinks and kitchen equipment? ▾
Yes, as-is. Removing faucets, steel clips, and plastic before weigh-in earns you a better grade, though.
